Thanks for the straightforward article. After having gone through the application process with the IPO and having to use a trademark attorney during the process, I would definitely recommend talking to a trademark attorney, for some basic advice, BEFORE making a full application (we paid about £150).

Although we now have a registered trademark which protects our brand, our name ‘The Letting People’ cannot be protected as it uses generic words….

Any advice on how we can protect our name?

Thanks this is a very helpful post. It is easy to ignore or forget the administrative things like this in all the excitement of building your business.

I definitely agree it’s worth checking if your brand or product name is one that you can trademark.
