Is Vine Dead? by Mike Pitt. :
This is video number 148 and blog post number 357. Mike Pitt is the Founder of Marketing Fundamentals Ltd. Marketing Fundamentals Ltd is a B2B Content Marketing Agency in London. In this video Mike Pitt answer the question, Is Vine Dead? He also discusses other video apps and platforms.

Is Vine Dead?

Hello everyone. Thanks for coming back to the channel. Recently I have noticed a trend that has caused me to ask, Is Vine Dead? Keep watching and I will give you my thoughts after the break. Top Viners King Bach with 15.7 million followers and Lele Pons with 11.1 million followers have started to promote their YouTube channels more. Lele Pons has 500K subsrcribers on YouTube and King Bach has 880K subscribers on YouTube.

The reason for this is that it is easier to achieve monetisation on YouTube than it is on Vine. On Vine once you are recognised as an influencer, as Bach and Lele are, you still need to broker sponsorship deals with brands. On YouTube Adsense revenue will come into to you dependent to the number of views and ads shown against those views. This is a clearer way to bring in revenue.

Video Content

Also Vine has been in competition with other apps in the video app space. Vine has 200 million monthly active users but Instagram has 400 million monthly active users. Facebook, the Daddy of all of them, has 1.65 biillion monthly active users. YouTube has 1 billion monthy active users and Snapchat has 100 million daily active users and amasses 10 billion views per day, yes, daily! One of these video apps was going to get squeezed and it looks like Vine has been squeezed. Now it seems to be lagging behind Instagram, Facebook Live and Snapchat. YouTube is a more stable environment for revenue growth and for these top entertainers to monetise their audiences.

What does this mean for you as a Business to Business content creator? It probably means that you should focus or re-focus on YouTube. Instagram has a lot of buzz around it and so does Snapchat but there are not so many models and case studies of B2B businesses using them. YouTube is still the best video choice for you. It’s fine to experiment with Instagram and Snapchat but YouTube should be the basis of your video content strategy. This is very much the lesson from what the top Viners have done, they have changed their focus and frequency of uploads on Vine and are now focusing on YouTube.

Hello everyone. A couple of weeks ago Vine introduced a new metric – Loops. You can read the announcement here. Loops are the equivalent of views on You Tube and demonstrate the popularity of individual Vines by counting the number of loops for particular videos. It has always been clear who the top Viners are because of their number of followers, ‘likes’ and ‘re-vines’ (the equivalent of retweets) but the new real-time Loops count is the first time a total has been introduced. Brands are very active on the platform but perhaps not in the way that you may have expected.

Yes, there are 6 second video ads on Vine. Click here to see one company that specialises in creating them. However, ads are not anything new or driving so much engagement if the number of comments, re-vines and likes are any indication. Higher levels of engagement are generated when brands are integrated into the often comedic story lines. In the movie industry this used to be called product placement and then ‘product participation’ . On Vine this seems to be where most of the action is happening. Below is a list of brands that have discovered this winning formula of product placement and are paying top Viners to promote their products.

Which Brands are winning on Vine?

1. Netflix

Netflix is an American provider of on-demand Internet streaming media available to viewers in North and South America, the Carribbean and parts of Europe.

Sample Vine referencing Netflix from Ry Doon (2.1 million followers).

2. Badoo

Badoo is a dating-focused social networking service, founded in 2006 with headquarters in Soho, London

Sample Vine referencing Badoo from Alx James (5.6 million followers) and Josh Peck ( 5 million) here .

3. Chipotle

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc 11] is a chain of restaurants in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and France, specializing in burritos and tacos.

Sample Vine referencing Chipotle from Cam Glass (367.7K followers).

4. Nike Air Jordans

Air Jordan is a brand of shoes and athletic clothing designed, owned and produced by Michael Jordan for Nike’s Jordan Brand subsidiary.

Sample Vine referencing Jordans from Jerry Purpdrank ( 5 million followers).

5. Starbucks

Starbucks Corporation, doing business as Starbucks Coffee, is an American global coffee company and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington.

Sample Vine from Josh Peck ( 5 million followers)

Inclusion in this list does not confirm that the Viner specifically received payment for the video listed. Both Viners and brands have been reluctant to confirm commercial agreements with the exception of Curtis Lepore who explains here how he can make $8000 with a 6 second video.

* “Do it for the Vine” is an expression used to urge someone to perform a dare on camera for a Vine video. It became a well-known catchphrase after this Vine was uploaded in Jan 2014 by Diamonique Shuler .

More and more companies are taking advantage of the advertising opportunities offered by online video platforms. Vine and Instagram are two of the most popular and each has its pros and cons, which we will examine in the following short guide.

Vine vs Instagram

1. Longevity

Whilst this is admittedly a minor issue as far as Internet technology is concerned and is less important than user numbers, it does have some relevance to potential advertisers. Vine, launched on January 24th 2013 has the edge here. Although Instagram has been around since October 2010, it has only been possible to post videos on the platform since June 20th 2013. This means that Vine users are more familiar with the format and may therefore be more receptive to short creative marketing videos.

2. User numbers

Instagram is the clear winner in this category, with over 150 million active users although most of these users were acquired before video was introduced and owe more to its origins as a photo sharing platform. Vine has 40 million users.

3. Activity

Things begin to look a little worse for Vine in this category. Whilst you would naturally expect more active users to translate into more activity, it is not a linear function as far as tweets are concerned. Instagram has a 6 to 1 lead over Vine in terms of tweets, compared to a user number ratio of roughly 3.75. However, these figures do not tell the whole story as outlined in the next section.

4. Functionality

Vine videos are more visible in the Twitter community owing to the fact that they are previewed in the iPhone and Android Twitter apps. This means that all users need to do to view the content is to tap on the Vine video preview in Twitter. Whilst Instagram content can be tweeted, the lack of a visual preview means that it has less immediate impact.

5. Format

Vine videos are limited to 6 seconds whereas Instagram ones can be up to 15 seconds in length. There is no clear winner in this category but the different lengths mean that one platform may be more suitable than the other for different marketing techniques. If, for example, you wish to create a more conventional advertisement for distribution online, Instagram’s longer format will probably be the best choice. On the other hand, the 6-second format that Vine employs has encouraged advertisers to be more creative and there are many excellent examples of how it can be used to great effect.

6. Making a choice

Now you know a little more about what each platform has to offer, you should be in a better position to make an informed decision when planning new online video marketing campaigns. It is important to remember that whichever platform you choose, you need to have a team in place to answer the consumer enquiries that your promotional clip generates.

The following summary may be of some help if you need a quick reference when making a final decision.

Winners

• Longevity – Vine
• User numbers – Instagram
• Activity – Instagram
• Functionality – Vine
• Format – a draw

Whilst I have attempted to remain objective throughout this review, please bear in mind that personal preferences always influence one’s opinions and your experiences with these platforms are unlikely to be identical to mine. In closing, I firmly believe that both are useful weapons to keep in your marketing arsenal.
