<p>The conventional wisdom in marketing circles is that Influencer Marketing is a new spin on celebrity endorsements and celebrity endorsements are nothing new in the business world. One of the earliest ever celebrity endorsements was created by the pottery company, Wedgwood in the United Kingdom. The founder, Josiah Wedgwood used royal endorsements as a marketing device to show value in the company and promote its products in the 1760s.</p>
<p>One of the inherent problems with standard celebrity endorsements is that often the celebrity&#8217;s star status can mean that the focus becomes the celebrity rather than the product they are being paid to promote.  A good example of this is Michael Jordan&#8217;s endorsement deal with Rayovac batteries.</p>
<h2>Influencer Marketing</h2>
<p>When brands form strategic partnerships with individuals who have lots of online followers to promote their products or services, <span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://intellifluence.com/marketing">this is called Influencer Marketing. </a></span></p>
<p>These influencers with large online followings represents an improvement on standard sponsorships or celebrity endorsements because the introduction of Social Media means that they can now connect directly with their followers.</p>
<p>The emergence <span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://www.bizcommunity.com/Article/196/669/207927.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">of influencers with audiences of their own</a></span> on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook has elevated them to similar potential earnings levels as &#8216;old school&#8217; celebrities. Consider this, Kylie Jenner now earns $1.2 million per post on Instagram.</p>
<p>I know what you are thinking, this is all very interesting in a general sense but Influencer Marketing is for business to consumer audiences, isn&#8217;t it? Kylie Jenner isn&#8217;t going to help me sell a SaaS product to middle -aged business executives,  is she?</p>
<h2>Micro Influencers</h2>
<p>You are right. Kylie Jenner would not the most strategically sound choice in that scenario. First of all, you must identify your target audience and your objectives and then partner with a micro influencer who is relevant for your target audience. A micro influencer has a smaller online audience than an influencer but they are usually experts in their field and have a tight-knit community of followers who trust and respect them.</p>
<p>Micro influencers are accessible and their followers take their recommendations seriously and will act upon them. Consider individuals with 10 -20, 000 followers online rather than millions and assess their engagement levels on their websites and social channels. Micro influencers are perfect for B2B focused businesses and can dramatically <span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbescommunicationscouncil/2020/09/02/in-marketing-a-strong-brand-is-the-ultimate-influencer/#79abf80266c1">increase your company and brand&#8217;s exposure,</a></span> bringing new leads to your business.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Hello everyone. Last time we reviewed Instagram we compared it to Vine and evaluated its merits. You can read what we thought <span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://www.marketingfundamentals.com/vine-versus-instagram/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</span> That was March 2014. A lot has changed with Instagram since then since then but before we summarise the changes we should explain that this time we have Instagram in a head to head with Pinterest.</p>
<p><strong>Pinterest Background &amp; Profile</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Ben Silbermann, Evan Sharp and Paul Sciarra founded Pinterest in March 2010. When it first launched there was a feeling  that it would be great for visual industries and e-commerce. The common consensus was that if you were a photographer or an interior designer it would help you to showcase your portfolio, highlight locations and attract leads and customers. In the early years Pinterest had a reputation that it was a Social Media platform with heavy female usage. This is borne out by recent statistics indicating that<span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="http://expandedramblings.com/index.php/pinterest-stats/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 85% of its 100 million monthly active users</a></span> are women. Pinterest is being used as an aspirational wishlist of perfect places and locations; it has become a place to create online mood boards around a particular theme or place.</p>
<p><strong>Instagram Background &amp; Profile</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger and launched 7 months after Pinterest in October 2010 as a free mobile app. The photo-sharing app  grew rapidly and had reached 100 million active by  April 2012. That was the month that it was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion. Since April 2012 Instagram has continued to grow its user base. The platform has introduced new advertiser friendly features making it easier for brands and companies to promotes themselves.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The two platforms do have clear differences but are worthy of comparison because they both allow users to upload photos and videos. Pinterest places emphasis on the creation of pin boards whereas Instagram encourages its users to take a reportage-style approach and reflect what they are actually doing rather than what they aspire to do. For medium sized professional services business neither Instagram or Pinterest are obvious choices for Content Marketing activity. This is exactly why there is an opportunity for a companies willing to use them.  Below I have evaluated both platforms using five significant criteria.</p>
<p><strong>1. Monthly Active Users ( MAU) </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Instagram now has 400 million monthly active users which is four times the amount that Pinterest has with their monthly active users at the 100 million mark. Instagram now has over 75 million daily users. The 400 million figure is even more impressive when you consider that Instagram was launched after Pinterest and that it has also surpassed Twitter that was launched in March 2006. Twitter has 300 million monthly active users.</p>
<p>Verdict &#8211; Instagram. Instagram has more traction and all things being equal you will be able to reach more of your audience there.</p>
<p><strong>2. Messaging </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">On Pinterest, pinning and re-pinning, liking and creating new boards are all very simple functions to perform. Messaging was introduced to Pinterest in August 2014 but does not seem to have caught on.  Users receive email notification when messages have been received and is easy to send a message but this message functionality has not really caught on in the way that it is integral to other social media platforms. On Instagram communicating with someone is intuitive, you can reply publicly to one of their posts and @ mention them to ensure that they see your comment or you can send them a direct message and they will receive a notification on their home page that they have received a new message. In more technical terms, the user experience around messaging and therefore communication is better on Instagram.</p>
<p>Verdict &#8211; Instagram is better for communicating with your followers and others on Instagram.</p>
<p><strong>3. Influencers &amp; Building a Following</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There are now many companies and individuals who have built up huge followings on Instagram because of the type of content they share and products or services they supply. Some of these companies and individuals like <span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://www.instagram.com/thebodycoach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Body Coach </a></span>you will have heard of. <span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://www.instagram.com/wholefoods/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Whole Foods</a></span> is a great example of how a retailer should run a successful Instagram account.  There are also great examples from professional services too,<a href="https://www.instagram.com/zahahadidarchitects/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="color: #ff0000;"> Zaha Hadid Architects are here </span></a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kpmg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="color: #ff0000;">KPMG accountants are here</span></a>.  By contrast the most influential Pinners on Pinterest are virtually anonymous and were given their huge audiences by Pinterest themselves. In a bid to increase take up in it&#8217;s early years Pinterest featured many of today&#8217;s most influential winners as &#8216;people to follow&#8217; and their followings grew exponentially as a result. <span style="color: #ff0000;"><a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://www.pinterest.com/bekkapalmer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bekka Palmer</a></span> one of Pinterest&#8217;s top pinners went from 30,000 followers to 9 million in 6 months.</p>
<p>Verdict &#8211; It is easier to build a following from scratch on Instagram than it is on Pinterest.</p>
<p><strong> 4. Advertising Opportunities</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">There may be occasions when you wish to promote your content. Instagram has opened up the platform for companies to advertise. Brands can create sponsored posts that appear in users newsfeed. It is not as clear on Pinterest how to advertise or promote your products. The top Pinners are able negotiate brand deals with companies but promoted pins are reserved as a service for Pinterest to sell to users in a similar way to how Google Adwords works. There is a lack of clarity as to how the top Pinners are allowed to monetise their pinning activities. It&#8217;s almost as if Pinterest hasn&#8217;t worked this out yet.</p>
<p>Verdict &#8211; Instagram is a far more business friendly platform for a Professional Services firm.</p>
<p><strong>5. Geo- Tagging</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When activated Geo- Tagging allows a business or individual to attach a location to a post. It gives your exact location. This is a great way for many businesses to raise their local profile and for customers and potential partners to find you. It is a also a great feature if you are have international locations or attend conferences and exhibitions. Geo-Tagging is available on Instagram but is not available on Pinterest. As an aside, if you are parents of children who use Instagram you definitely want to ensure that Geo- Tagging is switched off because the tags are publicly accessible information.</p>
<p>Verdict &#8211; Only Instagram offers Geo-Tagging</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This comparison of Instagram versus Pinterest weighs down heavily in favour of Instagram but you must assess each platform in the context of your Content Marketing Plan which will most likely also include Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. You should consider your audience, your objectives and the type of visual content will you be creating.  &#8216;Behind-the-scenes&#8217; insights will work best on Instagram whereas infographics will be better placed on Pinterest, for example. <p>Spreading your company’s name doesn’t just happen with a magical snap of the fingers, but it can happen overnight. With social media now able to spread content like forest fires across the Internet, it is now quite possible to get instant fame, overnight. Social media has become so important in today’s world that President Obama used it as a political tool to bring in over 47 million digital supporters. While Facebook and Twitter have become the big names of the social media arenas, there are a lot of other platforms that can bring in just as much, if not more, traction than the big names. The most underrated platform? Instagram.</p>
<h2>Instagram Instaguru</h2>
<p>With 200 million users worldwide, 60 million daily photo uploads, and 1.6 daily photo likes, Instagram cannot be neglected as a crucial source for spreading information about your company. It’s easy to use, it relies entirely on photos, and it’s accessible on every smartphone, which is where 90% of users get their Instagram information from.</p>
<p>In today’s world of online marketing, with blog posts and brand ads saturating consumers’ attention, visual content is far more on the radar than ever before. Instagram is all about the visual. It allows companies and individuals to showcase their products creatively, establish an online identity through that image, and create a #hashtag campaign to boost followers. Using a combination of high resolution, eye-grabbing photos and carefully thought out hashtags, you can create the perfect narrative for your company. Instagram allows you to do more than just market – it allows you to create an online persona. But remember, if you are establishing a personality, you have to know your following.</p>
<h2>Hashtags and Engagement</h2>
<p>Instagram #hashtags allow you to weed out your followers until you’ve found the right niche. Followers who are attracted to your brand or products will then, unknowingly, begin to market for you – the more likes you get, the more likely you are to get followed. Make sure that when you post photos with tag lines, you are engaging successfully with your audience. Edit your photos with a third-party editing app before posting them, and keep in mind that the most appealing photos have the subject of the photo in only two-thirds of the picture. Don’t be too redundant in your photo posts – aim for about 2-3 a week.</p>
<p>The easiest way to engage with your followers on Instagram is by liking and commenting on photos. Try the 5/3/1 formula as a rule of thumb: like five photos, comment on 3 photos, and you will earn one new follower. Get your followers to start campaigns for you, like Ben &amp; Jerry’s #CapturingEuphoria campaign that got their 366,000 followers to take pictures of themselves enjoying Ben &amp; Jerry’s ice cream. Don’t be afraid to start a dialogue with your followers, but make sure you sell softly, don’t harass too much, and be witty and wise with your words…or photos, that is.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>More and more companies are taking advantage of the advertising opportunities offered by online video platforms. Vine and Instagram are two of the most popular and each has its pros and cons, which we will examine in the following short guide.</p>
<h3>Vine vs Instagram</h3>
<p><strong>1. Longevity</strong></p>
<p>Whilst this is admittedly a minor issue as far as Internet technology is concerned and is less important than user numbers, it does have some relevance to potential advertisers. Vine, launched on January 24th 2013 has the edge here. Although Instagram has been around since October 2010, it has only been possible to post videos on the platform since June 20th 2013. This means that Vine users are more familiar with the format and may therefore be more receptive to short creative marketing videos.<br />
<strong><br />
2. User numbers</strong></p>
<p>Instagram is the clear winner in this category, with over 150 million active users although most of these users were acquired before video was introduced and owe more to its origins as a photo sharing platform. Vine has <a href="http://mashable.com/2013/08/20/vine-40-million-registered-users/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">40 million users.</a></p>
<p><strong>3. Activity</strong></p>
<p>Things begin to look a little worse for Vine in this category. Whilst you would naturally expect more active users to translate into more activity, it is not a linear function as far as tweets are concerned. Instagram has a 6 to 1 lead over Vine in terms of tweets, compared to a user number ratio of roughly 3.75. However, these figures do not tell the whole story as outlined in the next section.</p>
<p><strong>4. Functionality</strong></p>
<p>Vine videos are more visible in the Twitter community owing to the fact that they are previewed in the iPhone and Android Twitter apps. This means that all users need to do to view the content is to tap on the Vine video preview in Twitter. Whilst Instagram content can be tweeted, the lack of a visual preview means that it has less immediate impact.<br />

5. Format</strong></p>
<p>Vine videos are limited to 6 seconds whereas Instagram ones can be up to 15 seconds in length. There is no clear winner in this category but the different lengths mean that one platform may be more suitable than the other for different marketing techniques. If, for example, you wish to create a more conventional advertisement for distribution online, Instagram’s longer format will probably be the best choice. On the other hand, the 6-second format that Vine employs has encouraged advertisers to be more creative and there are many excellent examples of how it can be used to great effect.</p>
<p><strong>6. Making a choice</strong></p>
<p>Now you know a little more about what each platform has to offer, you should be in a better position to make an informed decision when planning new online video marketing campaigns. It is important to remember that whichever platform you choose, you need to have a team in place to answer the consumer enquiries that your promotional clip generates.</p>
